Cascade-Siskiyou National Monument Plan Approved By BLM Oregon & Washington

The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) approved and issued the resource management plan and Record of Decision for the Cascade-Siskiyou National Monument for Oregon and Washington yesterday. The plan incorporates public input through several public meetings and a 90-day public comment period.

Cascade-Siskiyou Plan Approved

The BLM is responsible for preserving the Cascade-Siskiyou cultural and historical legacy for the benefit of all Americans and managing its natural resources and the integrity of its diverse ecosystems.

The three separate plans under which it operated have been consolidated to ensure more consistent management of the whole monument.  Almost 4,000 comments were received during the comment period on the draft plan.

The National NEPA registers with BLM’s Record of Decision. The approved resource management plan and other related planning documents are available on the BLM website.

Native American occupancy of the Cascade-Siskiyou area dates back thousands of years. It features exceptional natural formations, including Pilot Rock.

Established by Presidential Proclamation 7318 and later expanded through Presidential Proclamation 9564 in 2017, the Cascade Siskiyou National Monument provides habitat for an array of rare plant and animal species across Cascade, Klamath, and Siskiyou. Its ecospecies include ancient sugar and ponderosa pine, rock buckwheat, tall bugbane, the threatened northern spotted owl, endangered gray wolves, Lost River sucker, and more.

The BLM’s plan, which uses the best available science to protect the monument’s objects of scientific and historic interest, will guide the management of the Cascade-Siskiyou National Monument’s 113,500 acres in southwestern Oregon.

It seeks to protect its important historic resources and biodiversity while also providing public access and recreational opportunities.
