Golden Retriever Lost in the Wilderness of Oregon for Over Four Months, is Ready for Adoption

Amazing Grace, the white Golden Retriever mix lost in remote unincorporated wilderness areas of Oregon for more than four months, is now ready for adoption.

Despite a green collar around her neck, the universal sign that a dog is well-socialized and enjoys the company of other dogs, no one has come forward to claim this ‘miracle’ pooch. There were no owner details on the collar.

Grace is Fully Vaccinated, Spayed and Microchipped

The one-year-old is now fully vaccinated, spayed, and microchipped, and under the care of foster homes and Golden Bond Rescue, Grace has picked up 11.8 pounds since her rescue, according to Golden Bond Rescue, a nonprofit volunteer organization that dedicates its efforts to improving the lives of Golden Retrievers and mixes.

Grace’s Miracle Survival Journey

The first sighting of Grace was in March when she was roaming a few miles from the unincorporated rural community of Plush, 40 miles east of Lakeview in Lake County. Grace was seen on several occasions between March and July, and how she managed to survive in an uninviting, remote landscape captured the imagination of Lakeview residents.

Attempts to catch her failed as Grace became frightened and ran away when approached. Even a post on social media showing Grace, determined to survive, eating a dead cow on the side of the road did not elicit a response.

Rhonda Dial, a resident of Lakeview who runs a humble animal rescue operation from her home, described the surrounding terrain where the Golden Retriever roamed as brutal, hot, and dry, adding that her survival can only be described as a miracle.

But luck changed for Grace when, on July 18, she wandered into a campsite in the Hart Mountain wilderness where members of the Order of the Antelope were camping. The organization is dedicated to wildlife conservation. They contacted Dial the next day and she agreed to care for the animal.

Describing her as a ‘true miracle,’ Dial christened the pooch Grace. With her rib cage and backbones sticking out from her painfully thin frame, Grace has gone from 61 pounds to 72.8 pounds under the care of Dial and volunteer foster homes. Dial says the animal was so thin that, in the beginning, she could only be fed small amounts of food every two hours.

From Dial’s animal shelter, Grace went to Golden Bond Rescue, where she is staying at the home of the organization’s medical director, Kay Yates, in Corvallis, until united with her new adoptive family.

Caregivers say Grace has been transformed since her rescue. She loves playing with other dogs and enjoys swimming and hiking.
