Jackson County I-5 Fatal Motorcycle Crash Victim Identified

JACKSON COUNTY, Ore. — An Oregon State Police (OSP) news release confirms that Chalino Tellez Cortez (19) of Phoenix was tragically killed in a two-vehicle crash on Interstate 5, near milepost 33, in Jackson County on Friday after crashing into a trailer.

The preliminary investigation of OSP’s Collision Reconstruction Unit (CRU)- a specialized unit that investigates fatal and critical injury collisions on Oregon’s highways, assisted by the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office, Central Point Police Department,

Fire District 3, and the Oregon Department of Transport (ODOT), indicates that a Suzuki GSX-R1000, operated by Cortez was observed traveling northbound at high speed by a Jackson County Deputy who attempted to initiate a traffic stop.

The operator did not stop and struck a Peterbilt commercial motor vehicle trailer, operated by Gurjunder Singh (28) of Yuba City (CA), in the fast lane. Cortez was declared deceased at the scene, but Singh was not injured.

The accident and investigation at the scene affected traffic for approximately two hours.
