Medford’s Livability Study Finds Homeless Encampments Have Decreased
MEDFORD, Ore. — The newest findings from the Medford Police Department’s Livability Team suggest that the City of Medford’s efforts to improve community safety and address homelessness are paying off.
The number of illegal encampments recorded around the city last month represents a massive 1,690% reduction over the last 18 months.
Medford Illegal Homeless Encampments Declining
A survey conducted by the MPD Livability team on September 25, 2024, noted that there are just 11 active illegal encampments around Medford, a decrease from 17 in March 2024, 56 in September 2023, and a massive reduction from the 186 encampments recorded in March 2023.
The illegal encampments in September were on city property (6), private land (3), and property managed by the Oregon Department of Transportation (ODOT) (2).
Aside from the progressive steps taken by the City Council, Mayor Randy Sparacino is grateful for community support.
This enables the council to implement policies that address safety as well as human needs. Sparacino said, “The significant reduction in encampments is a direct testament to the hard work and dedication of the Medford Police Livability Team.”
MPD’s Livability Team’s aims to improve the overall quality of life for all residents but at the same time ensure compliance with related municipal codes while reducing chronic homelessness historically affecting specific areas such as the Bear Creek Greenway.
By collaborating with local businesses and community members, the team can address safety and livability concerns while contributing to a safer and more vibrant city.
Working with local agencies through an embedded resource coordinator, the team seeks to ensure compassionate support alongside enforcement.
Aside from illegal encampments, MPD’s team seeks to build relationships with people experiencing homelessness and connect them to critical resources such as housing as well as addiction and mental health services. , and addiction services.
The report confirms that the work of the team combined with Medford’s forward-thinking policies has gone a long way towards creating a safer, more livable Medford for everyone.
