Mushroom Foraging Expedition Ends in a Nightmare for Oregon Woman Lost Overnight in Remote Forest
DOUGLAS COUNTY, Ore. — A mushroom foraging expedition turned into a nightmare for a 43-year-old Douglas County woman who went missing in a remote area near Camp Creek Road.
Alert Raised When Woman Failed to Meet Companion as Planned
Authorities were alerted when the woman, Mandy Greer, failed to meet her companion as planned at their vehicle at 5 p.m.
A search operation continued into the early hours of the morning involving four law enforcement units and an ambulance team and ended successfully when the woman was located and brought to safety.
Greer, who lives in Sutherlin, spent the night in an isolated forested location near Reedsport, east of Loon Lake.
Search Teams Included Fixed-Wing Aircraft
Search teams were immediately mobilized by the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office and included fixed-wing aircraft, drone operators, and specialized search and rescue personnel.
Their efforts continued until the early hours of the morning when the search was called off until the morning.
Two hours after the resumption of the search, a Douglas County deputy made voice contact with the woman using a siren sound sweep. Greer responded and signaled her position.
When Greer was found shortly afterward, she was cold, wet, and injured. She was given a cup of hot tea and something to eat while rescuers administered first aid. Greer was then transported out of the forest to an EMS team who provided further medical care.
The search operation involved the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office and the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office, assisted by the Oregon State Police Aircraft Unit, Sutherlin Police, and Umpqua Valley Ambulance service.
The incident happened on Tuesday, with Greer rescued the following morning.
