New Scam Hits Klamath County – Residents Must Stay Alert Warns Sheriff’s Office
KLAMATH COUNTY, Ore. — A new scam has hit residents of Klamath County, according to the Sheriff’s Office.
A Klamath Falls resident recently found a suspicious letter in their mailbox with a check for $9,900.74. The letter claimed the recipient had received a prize and requested they keep the details confidential.
But beware, warns the Sheriff’s Office, this is a scam.
Recipients are asked to deposit the checks and are then requested to give the scammer a portion of the money. The check then bounces, leaving victims responsible for the full amount deposited.
The Sheriff’s Office says the suspicious letters are easy to identify – no computer-generated tracking is printed over the stamp, indicating that they are placed directly into the mailbox and not delivered by the postal service.
Residents are requested not to deposit the checks, respond or engage with the sender, send them any money, or share personal information. Instead, recipients should contact local law enforcement agencies.
