Oregon Drug Addict Used Meth Laced with Fentanyl Before Giving Birth to Infant at Home
MEDFORD, Ore. — Fentanyl drug addict, Samantha Michelle Davis, told police she used meth laced with fentanyl on the day she gave birth to her baby son.
The baby, said to be days from death, was rushed to the Asante Rogue Regional Medical Center, and then transported by helicopter to a Portland hospital for treatment in intensive care.
The Baby was Screaming in Pain and Needed Immediate Medical Attention
The plight of the newborn was uncovered by a woman who visited Davis at her home to buy drugs and saw the infant in distress. In an affidavit, the woman said the baby was screaming in pain. He appeared malnourished and was in immediate need of medical attention.
When police arrived at the home of Davis and her husband, Mitra Osho Orescan, both 34, they found the 12-day-old boy is dire condition. Police said when they arrived on the scene, the newborn weighed under 4.5 pounds, had a ‘festering diaper rash,’ a gray skin tone, and infections in his eyes, mouth, and thumb.
According to a probable cause affidavit, a baggie with fentanyl was found by the police next to the baby’s pacifier.
The Infant was Days from Death
A nurse later said that when she examined the baby, she estimated he was days away from death.
Medford police say Davis admitted giving birth to the infant at home because she feared that her child would be taken into custody by Oregon child-protective workers, as had happened with her three other children. She admitted to police that those children also had drugs in their systems.
Davis admitted that the baby had not eaten for days, and she was aware that he was losing weight, according to the affidavit.
Samantha Michelle Davis Arrested
Davis and Orescan were arrested on Tuesday on allegations of first-degree criminal mistreatment, possession of fentanyl, and with first-and-second-degree assault.
Charges of possession of cocaine and supplying contraband appear to be connected to Davis concealing drugs in her body and bra that were allegedly discovered by a deputy at the Jackson County Jail.
Davis is in custody instead of $500,000 bail. Her husband was released due to overcrowding at the jail. By yesterday, neither had entered a plea or been assigned public defenders.
The present whereabouts of the baby are unknown, but Davis’ sister has custody of her three other children.
This is why I believe if you do this to your infant, it is mandatory sterilization. I am a retired labor and delivery nurse of 36 years. Many of these women go on to repeat this over and over again. She should never get custody back. It angers me that our criminal system does nothing to stop this. The women get a slap on the hand, jump through a few hoops, get their child back, just to get pregnant again and repeat the same process. It needs to stop.
