Dan Lanning On The Oregon Ducks Game Against Idaho
Oregon Ducks’ coach Dan Lanning’s post-game frustration at his team’s lackluster 24-14 victory over Idaho Saturday inside Autzen Stadium is evident. He concedes that the Ducks have to be a team that can create some explosive plays but they didn’t generate enough in the game.
Lanning gave credit to Idaho and said they played a really good game even though it was a tight match. The Vandals gave the Ducks nothing for free and there were a lot of learning moments for the Ducks.
Lanning noted some things can be cleaned up. He was hoping his team could create offensively and says they also gave up a couple of critical plays on defense but gives credit to coach Eck and his team that came out and played a good game.
The Vandals did a good job of stopping the Ducks’ interior run game, and there were times that they struggled to get the ball in the perimeter and move it down the field. Lanning thinks the Vandals did a great job of staying on top defensively, preventing the Ducks from creating explosive plays down the field while generating some pressure.
On the Ducks defense, Lanning said there are some growth moments despite some positives. The Ducks were poor against the screen at times and they didn’t execute properly in some of the situational play despite knowing where tricks would come up.

Ducks Player’s Performance Against Idaho
Lanning also spoke about some of the players:
- Brandon Johnson: In his debut, he showed up in big moments and seemed to get a feel for things- especially the pick in the end zone which was a very big play. Lanning is excited that they got just what they thought they were getting when they brought him in and some of it showed up on the day.
- Dillon’s Gabriel: Dillon operated within the offense, understood what the team was trying to accomplish, and made some good decisions.
- Matayo Uiagalelei: Lanning is proud of Matayo’s growth and noted that that edge room in general has some really talented players who did a really good job attacking things. He looks forward to seeing Matayo continue to grow, which bodes well for the Ducks in the future.
While the Ducks dominated the stats but not the score, Lanning says there’s no doubt that they have a ton to learn from the game. As they now prepare for Boise State in a week, they’ll have to look at their game and figure out what to improve.
