Oregon Family of Five Lose Their Pet Dog and Cat in Fire that Left Apartment in Ruins

ROSEBURG, Ore. — A pet dog and cat died in a fire at a Roseburg apartment on Thursday afternoon. The occupants, two adults, and three children, were not on the premises when the fire broke out.

Roseburg Fire Department was called to 844 W. Princeton Avenue shortly after 3 p.m. When firefighters arrived on the scene, they found an apartment filled with smoke.

 

Evidence that Fire Started on the Stove

There was evidence that the fire had occurred on the stove and had been extinguished before the arrival of the firefighting crew. The apartment was filled with heavy heat and smoke.

The apartment suffered structural, water, and smoke damage.

The homeless family who lost all their possessions, including the lives of their pets, are being assisted by the American Red Cross.

A fire investigator was called to the scene, and the incident is under investigation. Seven Roseburg firefighters were supported by the Roseburg Police Department and the American Red Cross.

 

Residents Must Ensure that Smoke Alarms are Working

The Roseburg Fire Department has released a statement reminding residents to ensure that their smoke alarms are functioning and that sufficient smoke detectors are installed.

Residents must also ensure that working smoke alarms are positioned on every level of their homes, as well as outside every bedroom.

For increased protection, the fire department recommends fire sprinkler systems.
