Oregon Man Convicted of Stabbing Victim 55 Times and Burning Body in Car Trunk Faces Life Sentence

Seven years after Andrew Hathaway of Portland was found dead with 55 stab wounds in the trunk of a burning car, a 44-year-old man was found guilty by a jury of the Multnomah County Circuit Court on Friday.

 

Sentencing Will be on Wednesday in the Multnomah County District Circuit Court

Thomas Robert Colon will be sentenced on Wednesday, 19 March for murdering Hathaway on 5 September 2018. Colon faces a minimum mandatory life sentence.

 

Charred Body Found in Trunk of Burning Car

The protracted murder investigation began when firefighters responded to a call of a burning vehicle in the 6200 block of N Marine Drive. Hathaway’s charred body was in the trunk of a 2003 white Chevy Impala. He was said to have died before the car was set alight.

Police found that Hathaway and Colon were involved in a physical altercation, during which Hathaway died. His body was placed into the trunk of a car that was left in a vacant parking lot and set alight.

 

He Was Stabbed 55 Times

A medical examiner found that Hathaway had been stabbed 55 times and had also sustained six slice wounds.

A jury convicted Colon of second-degree murder after he pleaded guilty to second-degree arson and abuse of a corpse, as well as tampering with physical evidence.

Multnomah County District Senior Deputy Shawn Overstreet said in a statement that the guilty verdict had brought close and some justice for the Hathaway
