Oregon Man Faces 14 Charges After Police Car Chase and Shooting

Portland police have arrested Jamari D. Chapala (28) in connection with a car chase and shooting incident on Saturday morning.

Chapala, who lives in Portland, is now facing 14 charges and is booked into the Multnomah County Detention Center.

At 10.13 a.m. on Saturday, police officers from the Portland East Precinct were called to Southeast 109th Avenue and Southeast Division Street to investigate a shooting during a car chase.

Police found gunfire evidence close to Southeast 109th Avenue and Southeast Clinton Street and interviewed several eyewitnesses The police also obtained surveillance videos that provided information about the two vehicles.

Shortly afterward, two police officers spotted one of the suspect vehicles, a 2005 maroon Toyota Avalon sedan, near Southeast Division Street and Southeast 117th Avenue.

A car chase ensued, and three occupants jumped out of the vehicle at a parking lot at Southeast 112th Avenue and Southeast Division Street, running into a nearby bar.

Police secured a perimeter of the premises and called for backup, including a K9 unit.

The three suspects surrendered and were placed in detention.

In a separate operation, policemen located the shooting victim. He was unharmed but his vehicle, a 1993 red Dodge Dakota pickup, had been struck by bullets.

The victim was interviewed by detectives from the Enhanced Community Safety Team and a search warrant was issued on the suspect’s vehicle. Police seized a handgun.

Jamari D. Chapala faces two counts of second-degree attempted murder, two first-degree counts of assault, two counts of unlawful use of a weapon, and a felon in possession of a firearm. He also faces city code violations for the unlawful possession of a loaded firearm in public and the unlawful discharge of a firearm.

Chapala has also been charged with failure to report as a sex offender misdemeanor, and four warrants of arrest.
