Oregon Man Found Guilty on 14 Charges Related to a One-Hour Spree of Violence Involving Four Innocent Bystanders
A Clackamas County man who went on a one-hour spree of violence while trying to escape custody has been found guilty on 13 charges, including two counts of attempted second-degree murder. Judge Susie L. Norby also found him guilty of a felon in possession of a firearm.
Gary Johnson Faces 28 Years in Jail After Violent Carjacking Spree
Gary Johnson (40) now faces 28 years in prison. He has been in custody in the Clackamas County Jail since March 2022 and will be sentenced on November 18 for a violent carjacking spree in which three people were wounded following his robbery at Macy’s department store in Clackamas County on February 28, 2022.
Jurors heard that Johnson walked out of Macy’s carrying an armload of shoplifted merchandise and proceeded to fire two shots at a man sitting in an SUV. The shots missed, and Johnson forced the man out of the vehicle, jumped in, and made his escape.
The shoplifter then abandoned the hijacked vehicle a mile away from the shopping mall near Oregon 224 and Interstate 205, where he forced another driver out of his vehicle before once again making his escape.
He Shot at and Attacked a Woman Who Was His Third Victim
Johnson drove to a storage facility in Milwaukie and approached his third hijack victim – a woman who he shot at, held at gunpoint, and then struck her with the gun, inflicting serious eye and facial injuries. The robber also attacked a bystander who had tried to intervene.
Deputy District Attorney Randi Hall said the lives of the robber’s four victims were ‘forever changed’ in ‘one chaotic and violent hour’ by the perpetrator, Gary Johnson. All four victims gave evidence at the Clackamas County Court trial last week, Thursday.
Defense lawyer Thomas Hanrahan mounted no defense, and neither did he deny that his client has used violence. However, he pointed out Johnson had not intended to kill anyone.
