Oregon Man Sentenced to 16 Years in Jail for Stabbing His Cousin to Death
A 28-year-old man who was on post-prison supervision was found guilty of first-degree manslaughter and sentenced to 16 years in prison for stabbing his cousin to death.
Jarrod Yahtin-Cloud pleaded guilty in the Multnomah County Circuit Court to the death of Cecil Yahtin (32) on January 9 at a house he shared with his cousin and sister near Northeast Glisan Street and 126th Avenue in Hazelwood, Portland.
Argument Started Over Caring for Children
According to the police, Yahtin’s sister lived at the house with her brother and cousin. She said the two men began fighting because her brother thought Yahtin-Cloud was not offering to help enough with the children. She later found her brother’s body in the garage.
According to a probable cause affidavit, Yahtin-Cloud apologized before fleeing on foot. He was arrested the following day when police were flagged down by a woman near the Hazel Heights Apartment complex who said there was a man inside her tent.
Man’s Family Supported His First-Degree Manslaughter Plea
At the sentencing hearing at which Judge Christopher Marshall presided, prosecutors said that Yahtin-Cloud’s family had expressed support for his plea of guilty to first-degree manslaughter. He was originally charged with second-degree murder.
Yahtin-Cloud spent little more than a year with his family after his release from prison and was on post-prison supervision at the time of the stabbing. He was sentenced to 15 months imprisonment in Jefferson County in 2022 for possession of a weapon.
Yahtin-Cloud did not make a statement at his sentencing hearing attended by several family members who sat weeping. Addressing the sentencing hearing, some of Yahtin-Cloud’s family members said that Cecil Yahtin loved his family.
They described him as outgoing, loving, and caring and they could not understand how another family member could end his life.
Cecil Yahtin was one of 10 people who lost their lives in homicides in the Hazelwood neighborhood this year – the most of any suburb of Portland.
