Oregon Man Who Tried to Smuggle Drugs into a Detention Center Jailed for 10 Years
A 30-year-old Portland man, Levi Denison, was sentenced to 10 years’ imprisonment on Tuesday on a string of charges including attempted drug smuggling into the Multnomah County Detention Center.
Other charges against him included injuring a corrections officer, illegal use of identity cards, promoting prostitution, methamphetamine possession, unlawful use of a vehicle, fleeing from an officer, felon in possession of a firearm, and conspiracy to sell meth.
In June, Denison was found guilty together with four other people for conspiring to supply contraband and to commit the unlawful delivery of various drugs into the Multnomah jail.
Denison was simultaneously charged with aggravated identity theft, promoting prostitution, and conspiring to promote prostitution.
According to the indictment, Denison conspired with four other men to smuggle drugs into the detention center. The incident occurred last November using telecommunications to hatch the plot.
The Plan Backfired When Group Was Confronted by Deputies
The plan backfired when deputies from the sheriff’s office confronted the group before the drugs found their way into the prison system.
Drug smuggling and death by overdose are problems plaguing Multnomah County jails in recent years.
Medical examiner records show that 10 people died in county jails between 2022 and 2023, three from drug overdoses.
The estate of one of the men who died in jail last year has threatened legal action against the county, citing the failure of medical staff to assist his client before dying in his jail cell from a fentanyl overdose.
