Oregon Man’s Carjacking Rampage Ends with 15-Year Prison Sentence
MEDFORD, Ore. — The Oregon U.S. Attorney’s Office wrapped up a four-year case last Friday when Gregory Escobedo, Jr. (31) was sentenced to federal prison for carjacking three victims at gunpoint.
Escobedo was sentenced to 15 years and will serve the first 100 months of his sentence concurrently with a 180-to-360-month state prison sentence previously imposed in Canyon County, Idaho. This portion of his sentence will be served in an Idaho state prison.
The remaining 80 months of his federal sentence will be served in federal prison following the completion of his state prison sentence.
When Escobedo is released from federal prison, he will complete a three-year term of federal supervised release.
He Hijacked Three Victims and Shot a Truck Driver
Court documents show that on 3 March 2021, Escobedo ordered a victim at an apartment complex in Ontario, Oregon, to exit their vehicle at gunpoint before driving away in the stolen vehicle. The following day, he carjacked another victim parked on the side of the road while brandishing a firearm.
However, the stolen vehicle was out of gas and Escobedo quickly returned to the vehicle obtained in his first heist before fleeing the area.
In Caldwell, Idaho, later the same day, Escobedo stole a truck that was left unattended at a gas station. The owner followed Escobedo, forcing him to stop the truck before confronting him. Escobedo shot the unarmed truck driver in the chest and fled.
The victim survived his injury after treatment at a hospital. Escobedo was apprehended by law enforcement officers shortly after the shooting.
On 20 May 2021, a Medford federal grand jury returned a five-count indictment charging Escobedo with carjacking, possessing a firearm during a crime of violence, and possessing a firearm as a convicted felon. Escobedo pleaded guilty to two counts of carjacking on 7 July 2024.
The case was investigated by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, and prosecuted by Judith Harper, Assistant U.S. Attorney for the District of Oregon.
