Oregon Senators Warn Trump’s NIH Funding Cuts Could Stifle Medical Research Breakthroughs

The Trump Administration’s decision to cut federal funding to the National Institutes of Health (NIH) will damage medical research, say Oregon U.S. Senators Jeff Merkley and Ron Wyden.

The lawmakers say the decision to cut NIH funding would set back generations of research conducted at the Oregon Health and Science University (OHSU), the Oregon State University (OSU), the University of Oregon (UO), Portland State University (PSU), and several othe5r institutions.

The NIH is the largest public funder of biomedical research in the world, and Sen. Merkley says that cutting funds will damage scientific breakthroughs, medical technology innovation, and the prevention of infectious diseases.

The senators joined an effort to emphasize the important work conducted at these institutions after the Senate vote approving the appointment of Robert F. Kennedy Jr. As the Secretary of Health and Human Services.
