2 Portland Eateries Feature On NYT Best New Restaurants List

There are a vast number of diverse restaurants across the U.S., old and new. Reporters and editors from The New York Times were lucky enough to experience many of them before deciding on their 50 current favorites. They picked 2 in Oregon- both in Portland, among them.

New York Times Best Restaurants In Oregon 2024

Although the majority of restaurants on the list- 32, are new, some old favorites also appear on their list of best restaurants- the 4th list published so far.

In Portland, they found two that impressed them. L’Orange, with its Coastal Western Mediterranean feel, blends good wine and Pacific Northwest ingredients to channel the region’s warmth. Yaowarat, which could easily fit into Bangkok’s Chinatown, serves dishes from the mainland found on a trip by Langbaan owner Earl Nimson and his team.

What The NYT Said About Portland Restaurants

Brian Gallagher, senior New York Times editor had this to say about the Portland restaurants:

L’Orange: Chef Joel Stocks, who speaks French with a Pacific Northwest accent changes the menu with the seasons.

No menu item exceeds $30 yet some of the enticing dishes described by Gallagher include:

  • A  Bay shrimp and Gruyère-filled Buckwheat crepe zinged with candied jalapeño.
  • Chicken liver mousse tartlet with a red wine and strawberry gelée.
  • A ruffle of shaved tête de moine cheese.

Yaowarat: With a moody light cast by candles and paper lanterns, Gallagher describes some of the mouthwatering dishes as:

  • A silky mapo tofu.
  • Double-fried chive cakes, with the perfect balance between crisp outside and fluffy inside.
  • Kuay teow kua gai, chewy wide rice noodles with chicken and a steamed egg.
  • Yaowarat Road Squid, served with Thai chiles and a fish sauce, just like the best street food.
