Portland Police is Calling for Volunteers to Serve on its Racial Equity Advisory Council

PORTLAND, Ore. — The Portland Police Bureau’s Racial Equity Plan (REP) to ensure that all members of the community, irrespective of identity background, receive quality services, is calling for volunteers to the Police Equity Advisory Council.

The REP Hopes to Transform Relationships Between Police and the Community

Now in its second year, the REP is aimed at transforming the relationship between the police and the community.

PPB chief, Bob Day says the police are committed to racial equity and to building trust within the community to make Portland and more livable and safer place. He says the initiative will focus on reinforcing community engagement and reducing crime and the fear of crime.

The creation of the REP goals was a long process involving input from internal stakeholders and members of the community, explains Equity and Inclusion Officer, Brody M. Sargent.

He says sections of the REP have been changed to align with PPB’s vision to transform the relationship between the police and the community.

  • As part of its 2024-25 goal, the REP plans to develop and implement a community-inclusion program for training in Advanced Academy and Sargeant’s Academy classes.
  • Develop and implement an education program led by the community to enhance the PPB’s educational content and programs – this will include Community Police Academies, Community Active Shooter Preparedness, and De-escalation classes and workshops.
