Wallethub- the personal finance website, did a study to rank the best foodie cities in the country. To explain how the ranking was ordered, Wallethub indicated that Americans generally use the word, “foodie” to describe gourmet dining enthusiasts.

Foodie culture isn’t restricted to restaurants. It includes food connoisseurs who like trying unique new flavors in their kitchens and at less conventional sources such as food carts.

Over 180 cities were scoured to pinpoint the best and cheapest foodie places. The factors  WalletHub relied on included the cost of groceries, accessibility to high-quality restaurants, and the number of food festivals per capita in each city.

The Top 5 Foodie cities in the study were:

  • #1: Miami, Florida
  • #2: San Francisco, California
  • #3: Orlando, Florida
  • #4: Portland, Oregon
  • #5: Tampa, Florida

WalletHub Analyst Chip Lupo confirmed that the rankings reflect Portland’s foodie scene, from upscale dining to street food. This is thanks to its selection of restaurants, food trucks, and vibrant food culture.

On the downside, Portland ranks very low in affordability. At 101st, it suggests that the high quality and diversity of food comes at a higher cost than in top cities. Lupo did indicate that Portland gives its foodies a well-rounded experience.

Recognizing that- in blending unique local flavors with culinary creativity, there is ample room for improvement, he said that these experiences could be made more affordable.
