Portland Secures Victory as California Judge Blocks Trump Administration’s Funding Cuts to Sanctuary Cities
PORTLAND, Ore. — Portland, a sanctuary city since 2017 that limits its cooperation with federal immigration enforcement efforts, especially those aimed at deporting immigrants, has won a reprieve from the Trump administration’s executive orders to withhold funding to sanctuary cities.
Portland joined other local governments in February to fight the sanctions and, on Thursday, a California judge issued a preliminary injunction citing portions of the executive orders as unconstitutional.
The ruling blocks the federal government from withdrawing funds from sanctuary cities.
Apart from an executive order withholding federal funding from sanctuary jurisdictions, another executive order directed all federal agencies not to make payments to state and local governments that ‘shield illegal aliens from deportation.’
