Rumor Has it that a Sequel to The Goonies is in the Pipeline
“Goonies never say die!” – the mantra of the ragtag group is taking on a whole new meaning. Rumor has it that a sequel of The Goonies is in the pipeline, but before you get too excited remember the emphasis is on RUMOR.
Spielberg’s Story Stoked a Cult Following
Based on a story by Steven Spielberg, and filmed in Oregon, The Goonies soon developed a cult following. It’s about a group of children in the ‘Goon Docks,’ a neighborhood in Astoria, the oldest city in Oregon.
They discover an old treasure map that helps them unearth legendary pirate One-Eyed Willy’s long-lost fortune while trying to save their homes from foreclosure. During their adventure, The Goonies are chased by a family of crooks who want the treasure for themselves.
The heart of The Goonies cult following beats strongest in Oregonian hearts. It was filmed in Astoria, the oldest city in Oregon in Clatsop County, and at the small northwest coastal city of Cannon Beach.
The $19 million movie was released in 1985 and grossed $9 million in its opening weekend in the U.S., second on the charts behind Rambo: First Blood Part II. Its box office takings of $63.9 million in the United States and Canada, placed it among the top10 highest-grossing films of that year and raked in another $60.6 million overseas, grossing $125 million worldwide.
Internet is Abuzz with Rumors of a Sequel
Now, nearly four decades later, the internet is abuzz with rumors about a sequel. It even has a title – Goonies are Good Enough – and is set for release over the Christmas holidays in 2026.
But do you remember what Steven Spielberg said about a sequel? He told cast members at a Goonies reunion in 2020 that they had raised such a high bar with the 1985 production, that ‘I don’t think we’ve really successfully been able to find’ a better idea.
According to The Sun, a sequel has been given the go-ahead. This rumor was echoed in Reddit posts claiming that Warner Bros. had given the project the nod. The working title – Goonies are Good Enough – pays homage to Cyndi Lauper’s iconic anthem in the original movie.
Tabloids Give Credence to the Rumors
Giving credence to the rumors is the fact tabloids like the Daily Mail and the New York Post have run with the story, while RuPaul’s Drag Race Family posted a movie poster update that looks ridiculously official, attracting more than 140,000 reactions, 30,000 comments, and 67k shares.
But no major entertainment outlets have confirmed the project, nor has Warner Bros. or anyone attached to the original film.
Nevertheless, the idea of a Goonies sequel makes sense in today’s Hollywood climate with its remakes, reboots, and sequels. In fact, Mikey’s cry of ‘Goonies never say die’ couldn’t be more appropriate than in today’s rumor-filled hotlines about a second edition.
Fans are talking about the return of the original crew, admittedly now a lot older, but say what joy it would give them to watch a new adventure with the old stars’ kids in tow.
But let’s face it. Goonies are Good Enough is more fiction than fact and fans may have to take solace in daydreaming until such time, if ever, confirmation is given of the Goonie’s return to the big screen.
