SOU Raiders Score 10 Times More Than Simpson University

In Saturday’s game played at Bill Johnson Community Stadium in Redding, California, Southern Oregon delivered 49 points and 449 yards in the first half before finishing with a 70-7 win over Simpson University.

This was the fifth time in the team’s history that the 23-ranked Raiders reached the 70-point mark, finishing with 636 yards of offense, their highest total in eight years. Scoring touchdowns on their first eight drives of the game, the team averaged 9.9 yards per play from scrimmage and surrendered only 169 yards.

The points allowed by SOU so far- 14, is the lowest combined for opponents over the first two games of a season since 2001. In Saturday’s game, the Raiders led 14-0 less than four minutes into the game. A 56-yard completion from Asciutto to Trevor Jaasko was their starting play and 7 different players went on to make catches of 20 yards or longer.

Senior quarterback Blake Asciutto completed 20-of-27 pass attempts over a record 354 yards and delivered three touchdowns.

This was the second time in his career that Asciutto had 300-plus passing yards. He finished the game with 74.1, his second-highest completion percentage.

Sophomore running back Gunner Yates made 113 yards and three TDs on 12 carries. Over his 10 regular-season appearances, Yates is now up to 15 TLDs in total, including 13 on the ground, after marking the second triple-digit rushing game of his career.

Isaiah Hidalgo had seven carries for 63 yards and two scores while Glen Leith-Ross added a sixth rushing touchdown. Four other Raiders also logged reception TDs: Brandon Barthel, Jackson Clemmer, Sawyer Cleveland, and Dawson Douglas (from McCade Long), but Cleveland led them all with 74 yards on four catches.

Since last season, the Raiders have won seven of their last eight games and given up an average of 12.5 points.

They are now 2-0 for the fourth time since joining the Frontier in 2012. The game next week against C of I will be the first top-25 matchup played at Raider Stadium since 2018.
