Southern Oregon Counties Air Stagnation Advisory Issued Due To Weak Winds

The National Weather Service (NWS) issued an Air Stagnation Advisory yesterday, which took effect and remains in force until noon PST on Friday.

Southern Oregon Air Stagnation Advisory

The Air Stagnation Advisory was issued in the light of strong valley inversions, which created conditions of weak winds, poor atmospheric mixing, and limited ventilation in Southern Oregon. Central Douglas County, Eastern Curry County, Eastern Douglas County Foothills, Jackson County, and Josephine County are included. Cave Junction, Grants Pass, Medford, and Roseburg will be affected.

Pollutants have been trapped near the surface, creating stagnant air conditions. This lack of ventilation could also cause air quality to deteriorate further, posing health risks, especially for vulnerable people such as older adults, young children, and those with respiratory conditions.

The advisory remains effective until noon on Friday, and at-risk residents are encouraged to reduce the use of wood-burning stoves and fireplaces,  limit outdoor activities, and avoid activities that could generate extra air pollution.
