Stephen King’s Fairy Tale to Become a 10-Episode Series
The Stephen King novel ‘Fairy Tale,’ originally earmarked as a movie, will instead be adapted into a 10-episode series by J.H. Wyman, TV director, producer, screenwriter and musician better known for the Fox Sci-Fi show ‘Fringe’ and ‘Almost Human.’
Deadline reports that American independent entertainment company, A24, has agreed to take on the venture about a 17-year-old youth who inherits the keys to a world at war where good is pitted against evil. Fairy Tale is a dark fantasy, showcasing Stephen King’s mastery of horror and the supernatural. The book was published in 2022.
King says he drew his inspiration for the novel from a ‘vast deserted city… empty streets, haunted buildings…and a gargoyle head.’ He says a palace with glass towers and a magic sundial that could turn back time were the images he wanted to portray.
Deadline says the change of plan from movie to series was because Fairy Tale is a 600+-page novel that proved impossible to transform into a two-hour film.
Universal shelved the project and executive producer Peter Rice, who had read and loved the novel, put the project together at A24. Rice will be joined by Paul Greengrass, the original script writer who was to direct the movie, as well as Wyman.
