Sunset Bay Flooded, Cape Arago & Shore Acres Closed Due To Landslide

COOS COUNTY, Ore. — The Oregon Parks and Recreation Department (OPRD) confirmed that Cape Arago and Shore Acres state parks are closed to vehicle traffic. The Sunset Bay State Park camping area was evacuated due to flooding, but the day-use area remains open.

On Friday, a landslide undercut a portion of Cape Arago Highway just south of Sunset Bay State Park, closing both Cape Arago and Shore Acres. The storm also caused flooding at Sunset Bay State Park, and at about 8 a.m., 19 campsites with reservations were evacuated.

The Cape Arago Highway landslide is between Sunset Bay and Shore Acres. OPRD indicated that the highway could be closed for an extended period but could not confirm how long it would take to repair and reopen. The damages will be assessed after the storm subsides this weekend.

The Sunset Bay campground will stay closed, possibly into next week. Although the day-use area is open at the moment, it may close if flooding continues. The restroom buildings were closed, but portable toilets are currently available.

Updates will be indicated on the Sunset Bay website, or the park office can be contacted at 541-888-3778.
