This Weekend’s Box Office Sees Tom Hardy’s “Venom 3” Soar As Tom Hanks’ “Here” Tanks

With the Presidential election coming up this week, the North American weekend’s box office was slower than usual. “Venom: The Last Dance” led the weekend’s box office while Tom Hank’s “Here” saw paltry takings.

“Beetlejuice Beetlejuice” took even less and collected just $2.1 million this weekend. The top performers at the box office this weekend were:

  • “Here” earned $5 million in its debut weekend
  • “Conclave” earned $5.3 million
  • “Smile 2” earned $6.8 million
  • “The Wild Robot” earned $7.6 million
  • “Venom: The Last Dance” earned $26.1 million in its second weekend

Studio estimates put the weekend’s box office ticket sales for “Venom: The Last Dance” at $26.1 million, dropping 49% in its second weekend, considered to be a small decline for a superhero film.

The movie has made over $90 million domestically so far over the last two weeks and more than $300 million globally, after taking $80 million for the studio internationally this weekend.

“Here” At This Weekend’s Box Office

Thirty years after the legendary “Forrest Gump,” the new Tom Hanks movie “Here” didn’t attract the same kind of audience for this year’s collaboration with Robin Wright and Robert Zemeckis in this graphic novel adaptation.

Adapted by Eric Roth, the “Forrest Gump” screenwriter, the time-lapse film version, distributed by Sony’s TriStar and financed by Miramax, takes viewers through years in a living room using a fixed angle camera lens.

The movie opened to just $5 million in 2,647 locations this weekend and critics also panned the movie which scored a measly 36% on Rotten Tomatoes.

Paul Dergarabedian, the senior media analyst for Comscore said it was a slow weekend but “Here” didn’t resonate with audiences. He said ‘Here’ was chasing a lot of the other movies on screen currently.

“Here” also came in behind Focus Features’ papal thriller “Conclave,” which dropped by 20% from its opening last weekend and was showing in 1,000 fewer locations than “Here.”

Dergarabedian said the box offoce is likely to get more competitive in a couple of weeks despite currently lagging behind last year by almost 12%. “Gladiator II” and “Wicked” are on the way and are expected to give the box office a boost.

The available figures are domestic estimates and final numbers will be released later today.
