The first Top 25 list was compiled by a 13-member selection committee and announced that the Oregon Ducks- with a 9-0 record, a key win over Ohio State, and five wins in the Big Ten by three touchdowns or more, are the best in nationwide.

The rankings will continue to be updated until December 8, which will slot teams into a bracket before the playoffs.

After Ohio State’s one-point loss to Oregon and Georgia’s seven-point loss to the Tide, Ohio State came in second and Georgia third, but the chair of the committee,  Michigan athletic director Warde Manuel, said “We’re splitting hairs as far as looking at two great teams.”

The only two-loss team to make it to the top 12 was Alabama who were ranked #11 despite there being a handful of other one-loss teams like SMU (13), Iowa State (17), and Pitt (18), who play in weaker conferences.

Boise State was ranked 12th, and other top 12 rankings were Texas (5), Penn State (6), Tennessee (7), Indiana (8) and Notre Dame (10).

National Conference College Football Playoffs

The rankings lead up to the playoffs which start on December 20-21. 5-12 seeds will be playing off at the higher-ranked team’s home field. The finals are scheduled to be held in Atlanta on January 20 when the national title game is played.

The first team out of the rankings that will decide who is in the final was SMU. Army, with an 8-0 record led the American Athletic Conference, but placed at No. 25 in the rankings, although this doesn’t dictate where the teams will fall in the bracket.

The four best-ranked conference teams receive first-round byes.
